The hard parts
What makes food look appetising — and honest
Food photography lives on light and texture, and packaged food carries information that has to stay accurate.
Appetite appeal is light and texture
Side and back light bring out steam, gloss, crumb and condensation. Flat front light makes the same food look dull. Every preset names a light direction for that reason.
Packaging information must stay accurate
Nutrition panels, allergen statements and net weights are small text the model can redraw. Never rely on a generated pack for that information — use your own photo of the real label.
Props should match what is inside
Strawberries beside a product that contains none promise something it does not deliver. Use ingredients that are really in the recipe, or neutral props such as linen and serving boards.
Temperature has to be visible
Cold drinks need condensation and ice; hot food and coffee need steam. Without those cues the scene feels staged, so say which one you want.

Prompt guide
Writing a food brief
Light from the side, cues for temperature, and props from the actual recipe.
Light from the side or behind
“Side daylight through a window” or “soft backlight” makes texture and steam visible. Avoid asking for bright front light, which flattens food.
Say if it is hot or cold
“Light steam rising” for coffee and hot dishes; “cold condensation droplets” for drinks. One phrase changes how believable the scene is.
Name ingredients that are really in it
Write the actual flavours — “sea salt and rosemary”, “dark roast coffee beans” — so the props tell the truth about the product.
Upload without glare on the wrapper
Foil and glossy film reflect hard light. Shoot packaging in soft shade or by a window, with the front panel flat to the camera, so the design stays readable.
How it works
From a phone photo to a food product shot
- 01
Photograph the product without glare
Shoot the pack or dish in soft window light, front panel facing the camera, with no hard reflections on wrappers or glass. For a plated dish, shoot it fresh and from the angle you want to keep.
- 02
Pick a food scene and name the real ingredients
Choose Kitchen Counter, Overhead Table, Chilled or Picnic above, then list ingredients that are actually in the product and say whether it is hot or cold.
- 03
Check the pack and props, then download
Compare the packaging design and any visible text with the original, and make sure the props match the recipe. Generate again if anything is off, then download the PNG.
FAQ
Questions about AI food photos
Does it work for plated dishes as well as packaged products?
Yes. Packaged goods with a clear shape — bags, jars, bottles, cans and boxes — are the most predictable. For a plated dish, upload a fresh photo from the angle you want; the generator restyles the surface, light and props around it, and the food itself can change more than a rigid package would.
Will the nutrition panel and allergen text stay accurate?
No — do not rely on generated images for that information. Small regulatory text can be redrawn or garbled. Keep the front of pack recognisable and use your own photo of the real label for nutrition, allergen and weight information.
Can I add ingredients that are not in the product?
We recommend against it. Props read as a promise about flavour and contents, so showing ingredients the product does not contain can mislead customers. Use ingredients from the recipe, or neutral props such as boards, linen and cutlery.
How do I make a drink look cold?
Use the Chilled preset, which adds crushed ice, condensation droplets and a cool backlight. Mention the drink's real colour in the brief so the backlight shows it accurately.
Can I use these images on delivery apps and menus?
Delivery platforms and menus generally expect photos that represent what the customer receives. If you restyle a real dish, keep the portion and ingredients faithful, and check the platform's own photo guidelines before uploading.
